Moulded fibre packaging – the symbiosis of sustainability and trendsetting

01-10-2010

The topic of sustainable packaging plays a decisive role for traders and the consumer goods industry.

According to a current study conducted by the EHI Retail Institute in Cologne, Germany (Sustainable Packaging Concepts in Trade and Industry 2009), three out of every four persons questioned are currently involved with the subject of sustainability with regard to their product packaging. Ecological and economical aspects play an important role here, along with aesthetical and sales strategy considerations.

Moulded fibre symbolizes the sustainable choice of packaging

Hartmann’s environmentally friendly moulded fibre packaging made from 100% recycled paper is for consumer goods, such as eggs. The egg packaging can in turn be recycled again after use. It is biodegradable and some of it is even compostable. This supports the EU strategy for the avoidance of waste.

The energy balance of moulded fibre is pretty impressive too. The raw material is CO₂ neutral and, unlike oil-based plastics, is made from renewable resources. This means that moulded fibre fully satisfies the demands placed on sustainable, environmentally compatible packaging materials. And it goes without saying that all production plants are certified and that egg packaging from Hartmann is tested for its suitability for use with eggs.

Sustainable packaging has a clear competitive advantage

This also has a positive effect on consumers’ willingness to buy. The most important reason for this is the environmental compatibility of moulded fibre. This is the result of a representative European consumer study conducted by EMFA* in collaboration with the market research institute AC Nielsen.

In a direct comparison of the two packaging materials, 9 out of 10 of all those questioned would choose moulded fibre packaging, which not only scored points with consumers in regard to waste avoidance, refuse reduction and recyclability, but also with regard to its functionality, appearance and aesthetics.

Moulded fibre packaging offers stability and protection, in particular for foods containing valuable vitamins and nutrients, such as eggs and fruit. Moreover, moulded fibre is not only a sturdy packaging material; it is also a sustainable communication and marketing instrument.

Moulded fibre egg packs with labels are rated considerably higher than plastic packs in the appraisal of perception and aesthetics. They provide more space for the brand name and product information and present themselves more distinctly and credibly on the sales shelf, thus increasing the motivation to buy.

Hartmann: CHOOSE FIBRE. SAVE NATURE.®

Hartmann sums up its position as the leading manufacturer of environmentally friendly moulded fibre packaging with the slogan CHOOSE FIBRE. SAVE NATURE.®

As a trendsetter where sustainability is concerned, Hartmann introduced an environment management system way back in 1991 and is still the only European packaging company to receive the “European Management Award for Environmental & Sustainability Development”, in 2000. Hartmann became a member of “UN Global Compact” in 2002 and signed its “Caring for Climate” agreement in 2007.
