It is a highly efficient use of a renewable resource: Advanced and environmentally conscious production, few additives and a raw material that would have to be disposed of – if we did not put it into good use.
STEPs towards sustainability
Hartmann has developed a management model that provides an operational structure for our efforts: Sustainability Tools for the Entire Product-chain. The STEP® model is used within the field of environmental and human progress.
For this systematic approach Hartmann was awarded The European Commission’s Management Award for Sustainable Development. The real reward of our efforts is however the continuous improvements generated by applying the methodology of the STEP® model.
20% energy reduction in 3 years
In line with our commitment to the “Caring for Climate Initiative” launched by Global Compact we have committed ourselves to reduce our carbon footprint and therefore we have launched a 3 year initiative bringing down energy consumption significantly.
The aim and ambition is to reduce the energy consumption in 2009 to 2011 with 20% per kg products.
The first step is focusing at our own production units, where significant potentials for cutting down energy consumption had been identified and actions have now started up.
The ambition will be met by focusing the efforts within the six areas pointed out below:
- Training & Education
- Knowledge sharing
- Best practice
- Maintenance & replacement of old equipment
- Expert counseling
- Investments
Besides pro-actively improving our responsibility performance and thus further develop our brand, we expect to reduce costs on energy in the years to come resulting from the launched energy initiative.
Our way of thinking
Good environmental performance in the production process has little value if the product causes more pollution in other phases of its life cycle. Our company is dedicated to life cycle management.
Not only do we manage and optimise our own performance – we also work closely with the other companies in the product chain. An important part of this work is our 10 sustainability principles, which acts like a code of conduct for our corporation.
